Byalais a city along the Yantra river in Rousse district, Central Northern Bulgaria. The town is situated in the central part of the Danube hilly plain, along the Yantra River. The name of Byala comes from the white color of the nearby rocks. At first, the people settled in the area of ​​the three hills called the “Byala Land” settlement. Later on, they called him only Byala.

 

The Belene Bridge of the Yantra River was built in 1865 – 1867..

The belenski Bridge of the Yantra River was built in 1865 – 1867 by order of Rousse valley Midhat Pasha by master Kolyu Ficheto. In reply to the French engineers’ proposal for the cost of the construction of 2 million groshes, the self-taught Bulgarian master states: “Pasha efendi, if the bridge of Byala did not build on its terka for 700,000 groschen, take my head!”. By betting his honor and his life, he respects his promise and builds the bridge of lime stone and mortar for 2 years with the labor and active participation of the local population.

Museum of the Russian-Turkish War of Liberation

The two-storey 12-room building functioned as a Turkish dwelling where Mehmed Bey, the governor of Byala, lived at the end of Ottoman domination. During the Russo-Turkish war, it was home to the main imperial lodge. Here lived Russian Emperor Alexander II, Military Minister Dimitriy Miliutin, Count N. Ignatiev, painter Pavel Kovalevski, the great Prince Al. Alexandrovich and other military and civilians. Two military councils were held in this house, whose decisions are crucial to the overall course of the war. One of them is General Gurko with the future Bulgarian Prince Batenberg.

After the liberation, the building was repaired and turned into a stone fence-style medieval fortress

City clock tower

It is conceived as the bell tower of the old Belene church, but has never performed that role. During the Ottoman domination it was forbidden to have houses and Christian churches higher than the house of the local bey. It was completed as a clock tower in 1872, and cost 13,000 groshes given by the Bleeders. In 1932 the upper wooden part was replaced with reinforced concrete. From 1906 to the present it serves as a city clock.
